I decided to put these pics of my "new" house in Asturias on a separate thread now that we have the image function back - for now anyway.
Some of these are old but I want to have them all in one place and to add to them as the project continues. Besides my recovery, this is the biggest thing going on in my life right now. I like the idea of them progressing side by side.
Here are a sampling of pics:
The house in February:

House from up the hill:

Demolition on first floor (recently used as stables):

Removal of flooring:

The living room is now getting more light from above:

I will update in new posts in the days, weeks, and months that come.

I know the living room looks like a mess, I will straighten up soon.
Any comments are welcome - such as, "hey, dude, I don't think you should have removed that beam..." If you want to share pics of your own do-it-yourself home project, that is cool too.

Hey, I'm in your boat too. This last 2 months have been expensive but worth it on my 1966 model split level-
New hot water heater New 4 ton HVAC unit New misc plumbing All new fixtures, fans All paint All carpet All new kitchen appliances, countertops, hardwood, wallpaper, and I just finished a marathon formica cutting project before the countertop guys show tomorrow.
Oh, and the next few weeks will have more hardwood on the big lower stair landing, and hopefully using a big ol' truck to yank some half-dead shrubs and landscaping. I swear I sweat more than I put in..lol..
Wheelbarrows full of bricks sounds like good therapy. I think feeling like a man is looking up over a well-though out project, and seizing it with gusto. Hard to imagine our past behaviors as something a burly testosterone-pumped man thinks is a good time. lol..

Just a short commit I think it's neat you guys doing things like that. Shows a lot more stuff than what we use to do. Sitting at the computer and afraid to blink 'cause might miss that next photo. Besides the sweat might make you sore to start with but it does build up to a healthier life.
Go for it you have the right idea....

Hey guys.
It is a big project - I am hoping to finish in a year. I don't have help but will get it for the things that I cannot do alone.
Basics of what will be done:
1. Removal of floors, joists, beams (all to be recycled). Installation of concrete beams and slab floor system. The flooring will be reinstalled over a plywood subfloor and the chestnut beams will be rehung but will be decorative.
2. New roof - but recycling the slate tiles currently on the roof.
3. New double-pane windows throughout.
4. Removal of chicken coop on rear of house, reopening of windows on rear bottom floor (closed when the downstairs was converted to a stable). Expansion of windows in living room area and structural reinforcement of wall to allow large opening.
5. Removal of external stairs on rear of house (this was originally four apartments for the families of managers at the local coal mine - now closed).
6. Excavation into hill behind house, construction of stone retaining wall for large terrace behind house, enclosed gazebo on a second terraced area immediate above open terrace. The gazebo will be enclosed using recycled windows from house and roofed with recycled chestnut ceiling joists and new slate tile. It will have furniture and a small wood stove.
7. All new plumbing, electrical, heating. Radiant floor in bathrooms (one upstairs, one downstairs), radiators in the rest of the house.
8. Open floor plan on bottom floor.
9 Three bedrooms upstairs, small painting studio, full bath. Vaulted ceiling in master bedroom with skylight.
10. Kitchen counters from recycled chestnut. Cabinet doors from recycled "contraventanas" - these are small interior shutters used to block light. Some are still in good shape.
11. All interior doors recycled from house - stripped and finished in natural color.
12. New appliances throughout. The cast iron kitchen wood stove will be recycled and will supplement a modern gas range.
Thats about it!
Here's what I did today:
Pulling flooring - this is slow work as I am trying to not break the tongue and groove of the pine planks so that they can be later stripped and reused. They are over fifty years old and some have some insect damage. I will inspect each plank later, pulling nails, cleaning, and selecting the salvageable pieces.

Where I finished the day. It doesn't look like much progress but believe me my back says it is.

That is such a great project! I also like that you are reusing some of the old tiles and floors. I bet it will look lovely!

Wow, that's quite the endeavor JohnG! Best of luck. I love the setting. Makes me want to forget about life and just roll down a hill!

Wow. That is a huge project - I enjoy the pictures, and will be following along - it's nice to have something a little lighter to follow along on the board. Well, light for those of us not doing the lifting.

All the power is off, right?
Sorry - that's just the 1st thing I think of once I saw dangling wires.
Keep up the progress - the house and the recovery!
Shalom!

hows come i cant see the photos all i see is the word [Image] I WANNA SEE TOOOOOOOOO!!!!! It is a big joke - there is no house. I don't know what the problem is. I can see them right now, so they are loading from photobucket.com ok. Can you try on another computer or with another browser (Firefox is a free download)? I ripped up more flooring today. I also started pulling out the joists between the beams. I am a little over half way done with the planks on the second floor. I dropped off my application for the building permit today. Here is where I am at now: Images temporarily disabled by webmaster.i59.photobucket.com/albums/g320/shanroche/18.jpg[/IMG] More tomorrow. JohnG
