Over the last few months I've been enjoying a wonderful piece of software to help me with my porn struggles. It's called PureSight PC, and is a real time web filter. It's free with TimeWarner Cable and probably with other cable providers too. You just go online to your ISP's homepage and there is a page with free applications. They will email you an activation number. Anyway, it's great, and even if you can't get it free, it's probably worth it.
Basically, you can set it to filter anything it considers "Adult" therefore blocking almost all access to porn. I have never seen such a complete blocking of adult websites from a software filter. I have literally tried to search and lookup everything I can think of, and 99% of the time, i get a "blocked" page. The few exceptions I found, I had the discipline to manually add to the filter list. It also has great functions like domain/sub domain blocking. For example, you want to block access to images.google.com, but still need to use google for searching, no problem. You can make this happen easily.
Once, you get your custom list set (I believe I have about 10 entries in mine) you're basically done. It is password protected, and here is what I do. Write down a long, random pattern of letters and numbers for the password. something you could never remember. Set the password, and give the piece of paper to a friend or someone you trust. Now you can't turn it off even if you want to. There may be a need to change a setting or something once in a while, so you'll have to ask whoever gave you the password to log you in, or give it to you. I suggest having them next to you while you make the change for your own accountability. You may also want them to create a new password once you're finished.
Accuracy: I have seen this block a site it wasn't supposed to only once out of thousands of sites. I'd say that's pretty good. You can always add a site to an exception list.
Performance: Now this is important to me because I do a lot of work on the Internet, so I can't afford to have long loading web pages waiting to confirm adult content. I must say i have been extremely impressed at the speed of the "checking." It is literally unnoticeable. You have to see it to believe it.
Results: I'd be lying if I told you I have never once tried to get around the blocker. But I can tell you I have gone to bed frustrated on many a night because I couldn't get myself into trouble. Sure, i was frustrated at the time, but I felt victorious (even if it was a forced victory) in the morning!
Finally, I feel less compelled to even try to look up bad things, since I know it's at best a waste of my time. Because I know I can't get to it, I've given up trying most of the time. I highly recommend this to everyone, especially if you have children (young or old).
Enjoy!
