Hello all, and welcome to my first and probably only series of Tech How-To's on No-Porn.com
The purpose of this How-To is to show you how to completely disable ads from your web browsing experience. There are actually many ways this can be done, some are free and some cost money. I can't possibly go over all the ways (as I'm sure there are ways I'm not aware of) but I will show you how to do this for free...
Mozilla FireFox
Probably the easiest and least complicated way is by downloading Mozilla Firefox at www.firefox.com then after installation go to here and grab you the Adblock addon. This is a multi-platform (macintosh/linux/windows) solution and it is all free and costs you little to no time to do. The only problem is you'll have to stick with firefox to keep the ad's blocked this way. If you wish to add an adblocker to MSIE 7 I believe you have to pay extra moneys to do so to a 3rd party add-on developer.
Windows 2000/XP/Vista Advanced website and advertisement blocking.
Crash Course: All advertisements come from certain ad servers (this is so they can track clickings) and so there is a nifty file called HOSTS hidden deep within your system (not really, heh) that you can modify to completely block certain sites. Modifying the HOSTS file is neat because it leaves no trace, and if someone is not computer savvy, by blocking a site they can most likely never figure out how to get that site back up and running (unless they modify the HOSTS file or use 3rd party software that monitors the HOSTS file) - Vista Users please note: You might have to temporarily disable UAC(User Account Control)
How to Modify the Hosts File
You'll need to know how to navigate through folders using windows explorer, I'll assume that you can do this for the purpose of this lesson. Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and open the HOSTS file with notepad. You will most likely see this:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
Now, for every site you wish to block (inculding ad server) just add to the list. like so: (if I wanted to block badsite.com I would do this)
The good news about HOSTS is that there is a free organisation who has a huge list of adservers already, and you can easily grab their HOSTS file.. You can access their HOSTS file here and copy paste. here: www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt
For more information on modifying HOSTS please go here: www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
