Hi...
Am new...
General question - what constitutes porn? I mean if you look at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition is that porn? Where is the dividing line?
I am sure this is subjective - but would just like some opinions?
Thanks...

I stick with the traditional definition of P, sex on film. R-rated movies that simulates sex does not fall into this category. The difference is for me is the lack of comprehension of someone getting paid for sex and filming it in front of everyone. It is a line that gets crossed.
However, that doesn't mean that R-rated films or SI mags or anything related to that are okay for a P addict. I used to not look at P but would use anything else but P. I could find and use many substitutes. The difference is that P would produce a stronger effect and more lingering aftereffects.
To be truly clean would be to not indulge any type of substitution at all.

Welcome. Why are you here? Who are you? Do you not know what pornography is? If you don't then you must not be a pornography addict? Why are you here? Who are you? Why does our opinion matter?

Welcome. Why are you here? Who are you? Do you not know what pornography is? If you don't then you must not be a pornography addict? Why are you here? Who are you? Why does our opinion matter? First, who I am does not matter, if I wished to use my name I would have... Second, I am here because I am trying to stop my addiction to porn (obviously) and am in the recovery stage (again, obviously - which is why I choose this section)... Third, Yes, I know what porn is, I happened to want to know what general concensus was as to when something crossed the line between porn and not-porn (note - I am not sure where the rated R comments form the post above came from - they seemed a bit off topic - but at least the person was trying to help - thanks to him)... Last, if you feel your opnion does not matter then why are you here in a support group and (again) if you are unsure as to why your opinion matters then why did you post a response. No offense, but your reply to my very simple request from some help, feed-back and opinion was not so much out-of-line as it was pointless, though asking me twice "who are you" was a bit rude. Perhaps you may consider that you might have become a bit jaded and perhaps you should re-think how you 1) respond to people on this support network" and 2) how you offer your opinions. Thank you, yes, name withheld on purpose P.S. except for the very nice second post, not what I expected from this group after finding it on the web in a search for some help resources...

Well howdy!
Your first post was a question. The who you are isn't about your name--Its about WHO you are. Thank you for letting me know you are a porn addict.
I am a pornography and compulsive masturbation addict and my name is Herb.
Not that I know some small bit I will give my answer.
Pornography to me is anything in any media that sparks strong sexual fantasy stimulation. I know there is erotic material that is not considered pornographic. The problem we porn addicts have is that we train our brains to make almost anything turn into pornography.
I have watched the morning news and made porn out of it. So, to me it isn't so much what constitutes porn that's the issue. It's how do I retrain my brain to stop making porn. That might not make any sense to you. I don't know.
Now, you're right this is a support group and you have had your feelings hurt and maybe developed some resentment. But you sort of jumped into the middle of the group without so much as a hey "I'm a porn addict" It might surprise you to know that malevolent people pop in from time to time just to torment us silly porn addicts.
So, please visualize a real-world meeting for addict support and a total stranger walks in and says--Hey what constitutes porn for you guys? Now, do you really think the group stops what is doing and says OH well it's----- or will they ask- WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?

P is simply any catalyst that induces prurient lust.

Welcome to the forum. There is alot of knowledge here and lots of people that have been what you are going through and want to help. The one problem is that we are doing it through written communication and sometimes, without the aid of body language and voice inflection, meanings can be distorted. One word of advice, if you aren't sure how someone meant something, just ask them. We have all been through a lot of pain in our lives and no one here wants to cause someone further unecessary pain. Notice that I use the work unecessary because sometimes the truth needs to be said that is painful, but critical for your development. Commonly known as tough love. I don't think that applies to the current situation though.
My definition of porn is anything that causes my body to release the chemicals associated with our addiction. If I am watching a tv show that has a woman wearing a tight dress and I start to notice her figure, it becomes porn for me. That is a pretty strict definition by alot of standards, but I think it is baloney to say that nude, simulated sex scenes aren't porn because they are rated R. It's the gray area of swimsuits and tight clothes that are probably in question. Every recent relapse in my past has been triggered by "non-porn" images. Therefore, to me it's kind of like an alcholic asking if beer is alchohol. It may not get you drunk as fast, but it sure makes it easy to say "screw it" and dive into relapse.
If you are serious about beating this addiction, there will be a lot of hard work and your feelings will get hurt. We tend to be an overly sensitive group. I hope to hear from you soon.

Hello,
I find that some people here are very rude and defensive, I also got attacked my first day here.
But I've had the same question "what is porn" I was suppose to do the 30 days of no P and no MB, I haven't watched any video or been to any sites and I'm good on the MB but I have been looking at a picture of myself(alone, not engaged in any acts) which I like, I'm not sure if I'm breaking the no P rule.

but I have been looking at a picture of myself(alone, not engaged in any acts) which I like, I'm not sure if I'm breaking the no P rule. Well, I can honestly say I've never heard this one before... But anyways, gather around my children and you shall hear THE RULE (rule) (rule) (echo, echo) Here it is........................................................................................................................................................................................................... .....................If you have to ask if it is..........................................................................................................................................................it is. "Better to cut off your arm and cast it into Ghenna than to keep your body intact and have your whole body cast into hellfire." Don't try to be cute. Don't try to be a tightrope walker or an acrobat. Don't try to be a lawyer and get yourself off via loopholes. Just BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF and stop looking at P........ or anything close to it.

P is simply any catalyst that induces prurient lust. I'd say 1dayatatime has done the best job at capturing this question thus far. I'd say porn is anything intentionally sought out for the purposes of inducing prurient lust. For some people, a cigar is just a cigar. For others, it's a phallic pornographic tool (sorry Bill). -FB

"any media product that is used for the purpose of personal sexual arousal, whether or not it was produced for that purpose" (petitjean's dictionary) ------- I decide what porn is. But anyone else is entitled to define it too.

I agree with facingit, if you have to ask, its porn.
The reason the question "what do you consider porn?" or a similar question annoys me is because I perceive that the asker is looking for a loophole. Trying to get away with something is not helpful in recovery. The question seems to me to be the addict looking for a way to survive. That's why the best answer to the question is the answer facingit gave. If you have to ask, it's porn.

I agree with most of the responses here.
Anything that is titilating, arousing or induces sexual fantasy may not fit some definitions of pornography but for addicts it leads to the same things and therefore iit doesnt matter how others define it.
